天主教宗方濟12日宣布他將任命19位樞機主教，任命儀式2月22日舉行。這19位新樞機主教來自世界各地，包括亞洲 (南韓與菲律賓)、非洲各兩位，南美洲三位，以及來自義大利、德國、加拿大、等國。19人裡，有16人在80歲以下，他們在下次教宗選舉時可能還沒超過投票年齡上限 (80歲)，因此這可以視為方濟挑選繼位者的第一步。另外，19人裡有海地和布吉諾法索人，可以視為落實方濟重視貧窮。
