生物學家估計狗狗的智力約等同於2歲半幼兒的智力，這結果來自幾個測試，包括：嬰兒與狗狗PK對字彙的反應，一隻狗平均能了解165個字，包含標誌與符號，約等於兩歲小孩的程度，而最優秀狗狗能理解約250個單字 — 這相當於兩歲半的小孩；在社交認知上，狗狗表現更優秀 — 大約等於人類青少年時期，狗狗清楚知道誰的社交地位比較高，誰比較落勢，還有，誰與誰睡在一塊。
