美國密西根州立大學生物系統與農業工程系副教授薩弗曼研究從水肥提煉可以喝的水，今年就能商轉。他使用厭氣消化器 (厭氧消化是微生物在缺乏氧氣的環境中進行生物分解的過程，用於處理工業或生活廢物，以之釋放能量供人類使用。厭氧消化用於可生物分解的廢物和污水，減少垃圾和減少排放氣體到大氣中)，加上「McLanahan養分分離系統」 (作用為超濾、氣提、逆滲透)，產生足夠乾淨而能給牲畜喝的水。一千頭乳牛每年能產生一千萬加侖這樣的淨水。薩弗曼說，這套系統在缺水的地方非常有用，而且這套系統能處理對環境造成衝擊的碳和病原，很環保。
